What isn't working
arXiv's own team has written candidly about why it needs a brand. The concept starts from their reasons.
A mark, not yet a system
The 2022 chi logomark was chosen for legibility, memorability and legal defensibility, and it delivers on those. But listings, abstract pages, PDFs and the newer HTML papers still look like they come from different eras.
The identifier is unbranded
"arXiv:2611.04217v2" may be the most-seen piece of arXiv, in every citation, slide and reading list, yet it's typeset however each page or person happens to.

The idea

“Research points at research with brackets.”
Square brackets mean "see this source". The wordmark puts arXiv inside them, and the compact mark puts a chi there, drawn heavy-and-hairline like a book face, so it reads as a letter rather than a close button. Red is kept from arXiv's heritage but used only on the brackets: it's the one place colour says "this is arXiv". Everything else is serif for reading, mono for identifiers, and plenty of paper. Nothing gets louder than the papers.

Construction
Drawn on a grid, not traced. Measurements are in grid units of the 120-unit master.
- Brackets are 13 units thick with 30-unit feet, the same in the mark and around the wordmark.
- The chi's heavy stroke is 22 units and its hairline 8, close to the contrast of Source Serif's capitals.
- The heavy stroke drops 8 units below the hairline, a nod to the Greek χ's descender, so it never reads as ×.
- In the lockup, the brackets run from ascender to descender, with 22 units of air on either side of the name.
- Wordmark: Source Serif 4 SemiBold at opsz 60, with arXiv's own capitalisation.
